The Seal of Robert II, King of Scots. 1316-1390
The Seal of Robert II, King of Scots. 1316-1390

Half of all men in the United Kingdom with the surname Stewart, or Stuart, can claim ancestry from Scotland’s Royal family. Research released by ScotlandsDNA has revealed for the first time the individual in the 13th century who founded a branch of the Royal Stewart line.

In the United Kingdom alone there are about 70,000 people with the surname, meaning that around 17,5000 men can now claim descent from the royal bloodline. The source of the line is Sir John Stewart of Bonkyll, who met his demise at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298 fighting alongside William Wallace. The Stewart family’s well-documented pedigree allowed ScotlandsDNA to carry out tests on his descendants, and those of his brother James, the 5th High Steward of Scotland and the grandfather of Robert II, the first Stewart king.

Dr Jim Wilson, the group’s chief scientist, discovered a marker that originated more than 700 years ago when ancestry tests were carried out on the descendants of  James and Sir John’s sons Richard and Angus. The results show that that the modern descendants of both sons of Sir John carry a Y chromosome marker S781+ that is absent in the descendants of James.

Dr Wilson added: “By a straightforward process of deduction that means that the marker arose in Sir John Stewart of Bonkyll, and not in his father. If it had, the descendants of James would also carry it, and they do not.” Having made the discovery, ScotlandsDNA checked its database of ancestry tests for men with the Stewart surname and found that 20 per cent of them share Sir John’s lineage, while 30 per cent are descended from his brother James.

James’s son Walter, married Marjorie Bruce, the daughter of Robert I, having helped him win the great victory at Bannockburn, and their son became Robert II.

Alistair Moffat, co-founder of ScotlandsDNA, added: “In the year of the 700th anniversary of Bannockburn, thousands of Scottish men can claim to be directly descended from the Stewarts who fought alongside Bruce, and they can directly identify with generations of famous figures who shaped Scotland and Britain.” The Duke of Buccleuch, Scotland’s biggest private landowner, who is directly descended from Sir John, and a long line of Scottish and British kings, said he was fascinated by the DNA detective work.

He added: “My family’s history has always been closely involved with the history of Scotland and Britain, but the fact that the rise of a DNA marker has been identified in an individual brings the past even closer, and makes it more personal.

“I am delighted to have been a guinea pig for the sort of history it is now possible to write thanks to DNA research.” The sampling has also, for the first time, distinguished clearly between different cadet branches of the royal Stewarts.

The four branches are the Appin Stewarts who fought at Culloden, the Lennox Stewarts who were direct ancestors of James VI and I, and the Albany and Moray Stewarts who acted as regents.

I’m Aaron Stuart. I live in America. Not sure if I am part of the Royal bloodline, but my family always told us we were. I’ve done ancestry DNA and it traces back to Wales. I’m assuming that was the departure point to the US. It’s pretty cool. It actually showed me where my descendants came to the US and showed their pilgrimage West.

    3. Christina Tumlinson says:

I believe Mary was my cousin. My 12th great grandfather was James Stewart, Earl of Buchan. My ggg grandma was Elizabeth Betty Stuart. She married John Slavin. They are the first of my relatives in America. I traced back to Mary through them. Some fascinating stuff!

        HI

I know I am a couple years late to your original post. My mother’s family is STUART. We were always told that we descend from Mary Queen of Scots. My GG-Grandparents were Edward Stuart and Agnes (Gallacher)Stuart who emigrated from Paisley(Renfrewshire)Scotland to New York and then settled in Thomaston, Ct in the mid-1800’s.

My question is how were you able to verify your descent? I am/was trying desperately to get my first cousin (male Stuart) to take a YDNA test but am having great difficulty.

I would love to know your story and how you came to know your information

        Regards,

        Brenda from CT

  5. sean stewart says:

    stewarts forever

  6. Luke Stewart says:

I’m from Santa Clara, California, USA, just south of San Francisco. My family descends fairly directly from the Stewarts of Appin, but we’re pretty diluted with Swedes and Germans. This is the part of my history I’m most proud of,though.

    1. Gerard Stewart Shields says:

I believe that my line is Stewarts of Appin too. I’m still tracing the line.

      1. Alexa Mitchell says:

        Hi
My 6th great grandfather was John Stewart of appin (b 1715 d 1786)- who ended up living in Ireland, but so far I’ve not been able to find any other recorders of relatives. The stewarts clan of appin fought at the Battle of culloden in the 17 40’s and have a grave marker still on the field, which you can see a photo of on the net. They also sheltered the survivors of mcdonald clan in the glencoe massacre in the 1690. I hope this information helps and hope to discover more.
        Regards
        Alexa

        1. Jane Kane says:

I was born from the Stewarts of Appin and my aunt had MacDonald as a middle name, so likely the same branch as yours. We’ll keep delving…

I too am directly related to John Stewart of Appin (4th).
His Daughter, Lady Margaret Daughter of John Stewart 4th of Appin Stewart was a Lochiel (Clan Cameron).

          She was my Great Grandmother.

From what I understand, Lady Margaret was the grandmother of Ewen Dubh 17th Clan chief Cameron 17th Chief of Lochiel.

Do you have any information about the De Carnys side of things as they seem to have had a son….Vicar William Of Carnys Of Glammys (Glamis). I stumbled across it on a couple of family tree sites. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Lady Elizabeth Stuart Bruce of Rosyth married to John Bruce 5th Baron of Clackmannan was the sister of Sir David Stuart Earl of Rosyth who had a great grand daughter lady Christian who was Lady Diana (Princess of Wales)’s 14th x’s great grand mother, is my gf’s 19 th great grand mother, so they are something like 15 th cousins. What is that, I am wondering, Royal or merely Noble, Stewart (or Stuart) line? Does any one have any idea? I am scots descent and now so is she because my heritage web site helped her make the connection.

  9. William stewart says:

We can’t figure out witch exact branch of the stewart clan I’m from I can’t seem to get to Scotland on my family tree I’m stuck in America

    1. Airemiss Stewart says:

Hi! I, too, am stuck in America. My great great grandfather was John Stewart, married to Amanda Collum. They clearly came to America from either Canada or Scotland directly, but I cant find much documentation.
      Good luck on your search!

      1. Brenda Weller says:

Try to search info about the Plantation of Ulster. Many Scots were offered incentive of land (including Stewarts) to relocate to North Ireland around 1630 – 1719. Then many emigrated to America in ships organized by Presbyterian Church congregations from 1719-1729.

      2. Aaron Stuart says:

Ancestry DNA will show you exactly where your people came to the US and where they moved along the way. It’s pretty neat actually

    2. Dottie says:

I’m in the same boat. I was told that we decended from Mary Queen of Scots but I can’t find where we came into America.
      I’m stuck on my ggg-grandfather Alexander I Stewart b. 1804 in S. Carolina

      1. Kiara says:

Same here! Last name is Stuart from my father. Family tree says we’re direct decadent also of Mary. Was Stewart but changed to Stuart when she adapted the name.

  10. Tammy Stewart says:

My Stewart’s come from Nova Scotia Canada. Hit a dead end on Ancestry.com with my paternal Grandfather William A Stewart. Would love to know if and what clan we came from.

    1. Robert Findley says:

Remember the Stewarts are from Dol in France they originally not Scottish, the royal line of scotland originally came from Ulster.
The true Royal line of the Kingdom of Alba is from Kenneth MacAlpine, they run through the Clan Mackay. My ancestor was Macbeth Macfinley, he had three children to his wife who was a daughter or grand daughter of Malcom 2nd. The modern clan name if Farquharson.

    2. Bonnie Hickey says:

Hi my Stewart are from Nova Scotia too. My grandfather mother was Margaret Stewart 1882.

  11. Lori says:

I too am a decedent of Mary Queen of Scots according to the research conducted by my family. I live in NC.

    1. Martha Stewart Fay says:

I, too, am a direct descendant of Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots. My grandfather was Walter Alan Stewart, his father was Charles Edward Stewart. Charles Edward’s father was a Walter Alan, and his father was a Charles Edward, and I believe to be called the Bonnie Charles. I am unclear as to where Charles the Bruce fits in, but I’ve heard this name mentioned within my family, when discussing our heritage. I would love to be able to trace my lineage back, directly, but seem to be stuck. My great grandfather, Charles Edward, went from Scotland to Ontario, Canada, and from there, moved to Canandaigua, NY. Does anyone have any suggestions, on how to trace backwards, from Ontario to Scotland, to my family’s origin?
      Martha Stewart

      1. Jramsay says:

Yes you can trace it back it back from ur fay line from new Brunswick Canada back to maine and new Hampshire he was only in ny state to sale land then back to ? Where he was warned to leave by his family and that why you find him there in new Brunswick where he did come back to be with his family and died thier he used sur name everill

    2. Zach B. says:

You wouldnt happen to be related to any Lowry’s, Carriers, or Jackson’s? My late great grandmother, Irma K. Jackson, spent the last 20 years of her life researching my family tree. Thomas Morgan(alias Thomas carrier) is the great grand father, the exact number of generations removed i can not remember, who sailed/fled from england to America. He was one of two personal body guards of king Charles 1 and later his executioner. From him it goes back to king John 1(sire your mole moved! I have a mole?!?!) the antagonist of the robin hood story, who is both my mother and father’s 27th great grand father. The research she did also included the family tree of her daughter’s husband(my grandfather) where the Stuart name leads back to Queen Mary 1. The majority of that side of my family is located in, as they pronounce it, “ruvton” and “hickry!” Noth Carolina.

  12. Adam Stewart says:

Proud Aussie with Scottish heritage descendant of Adam Thompson Stewart MC son of John Stewart journeyman boilermaker. I believe our family was Royal Stewart clan any info or any distant relatives contact me give us a shout out.

    1. Melinda Gierowski says:

Hi! I know your inquiry is old but I just stumbled on this topic last night. I was looking at a DNA match of mine, her name is Michelle Fowley (?) and she’s related through my Stewart line. She has an impressive, public family tree which shows Kings James Stewart I, II, III, of Scotland and several other royal family members. Try to look her up to view her tree. Let me know if you think it’s accurate! 😉

  13. Tammy Stewart says:

Hi, Tammy. This is Tammy also lol
I am going to do the DNA test/ have you thought of doing that?

  14. William T Stewart says:

    Hi Tammy,
My clan came from Perth Scotland and immigrated into Glengarry Ontario Canada. From there they came to the US and homesteaded in what is now Bottineau North Dakota. Not sure if we are part of the same clan or not but thought I would touch base just in case. My grandfather (William Ezra Stewart) was born in 1888.

My gr gr grandfather Peter Stewart came from Perth to Ontario then settled at Drayron N.D. I am also connected to the Stewart’s at Bottineau N.D. Have been able to trace back to John Stewart , his father James then hit a dead end .

    1. Laura J Thompson (Robinson) says:

Part of my “clan” also came from Perth in the mid 1800’s and settled in Scottsville, NY. I was also told that we are related to Mary Queen of Scots. My great grandmother’s name was Sarah Jane Smith…she married John Warren once she came to the states. It’s just interesting that a few of us here are mentioning Perth.

  17. Then there are us wily Stuearts who seem to mix things up a bit. I wonder where our DNA would fall. Too bad there isn’t a link to check your DNA for that Scottish marker.

    1. Martha Stewart Fay says:

That’s a great idea! Does anyone have the link for checking DNA for Scottish marker, that they could share?

    2. Martha Stewart Fay says:

      Jerome,
I found the link for that: “www.ftdna.com”
      Martha Stewart Fay

      1. Brenda Weller says:

These Y-DNA tests seem expensive. How extensive of a marker needs to be checked? Looks like there’s 3 levels 37 markers, 67, 111 or 700 marker testing.

  18. Frank says:

My grand mother was a Stewart from Dundee and her father my g/grandfather was aStewart from flesh vennal lane Perth before that Mc kenzies /kinloch/Robinson the list goes on i live in New Zealand now but have great family roots in Scotland

  20. James E Stewart says:

My particular branch of stewart was imported directly from Scotland as POW and we’re kept as indentured servants for 8 to 10 years I believe. Lots of stewarts buried in oatmeal, texas. My dad has done quite a bit of research on ancestry.com.

    1. Renea Judd says:

Was it Duncan or Alexander Stewart?

My husband and I are both descendants of SPOW Duncan Stewart, married to Anne.

  21. Ray says:

There are also Stewarts/Stuarts from Poland. The Scots started to settle in Poland since the mid 15th century. Several from this family line resided in Poznan and grew into a rather large family. Many of them assimilated into the local Polish population. With so many people doing the Y-DNA and mtDNA test we are finding out more and more about this family line that seemed to have spread out across the world. It was hard to believe at first that some of my ancestors that were supposed to be Polish ended up being Scottish. Thanks to DNA at least I know the truth.

    1. This is my family line and my great grandfather immigrated from Poland. I have difficulty with registrations because I have Eastern European and I know something was said about them going back to get records but Moscow Uprising and Nazi Germany happened so my family was not able to learn. This line it comes from the Derby family and it married a Laskowski and also Jackson (USA)

  22. My mother was a Stewart. Whave our line traced back to a dr. John Stewart that came from Scotland in 1687 and landed in long island ny. I would love to know where I could pick up the line over there

  23. Lyndsay says:

The rumor in my family was that we were related to Mary Queen of Scots. Being skeptical of this my whole life, I started researching and discovered we’re not related directly to Mary at all. In fact, we pre-date Mary. I traced our lineage all the way back to Robert II. I’ve convinced my brother to take the Big Y DNA test to be certain. What clan would we be? I noticed the Stewart’s of Fife use Robert II’s coat of arms. Are they descendants of Robert II?

  24. Matthew A Stewart says:

I wish someone could help me on finding my family back ground my grandfather David robert stewart died 2003 only child to Robert David Stewart his father who also died very young in Minnesota only thing i have of my great grandfather is a pin where he worked wich says on pin

I would love to meet some of my cousins from across the pond. I am a descendant of Henry the 7th 8th and of course Mary Queen of Scots. My grandmother and grandfather almost went back to England when my father was still but a child. They inherited Estates in Scotland and England but sadly the upkeep on the Estates would have been a great deal of money. The states were then transferred into the next of line. My grandmother’s name was Kathleen Dewlaney. If anyone from the family is interested in contacting me I am Eric cash of Jackson Ohio should be easy to find me on Facebook

  26. JMEB says:

I have recently done some research on my family tree and believe that I am related to royalty through Princess Mary Stewart (1380-1458). Is there anywhere I could confirm this relation? Thanks for your time.

    1. Laurie Simoneaux says:

It looks like I also descend from Princess Mary Stewart – to Douglas, Wallace, Hall, Reynolds, DeBord

  27. James Stewart Payne says:

Growing up i was always told that i was apart of this clan by my grand mother rachel stewart her father was a james stewart who my father was named after and i carried the same name. although we have the last name of payne we held the important part of our scottish family name as our middle name. we were told that we were decendants of queen mary and named after king james. I have taken a huge interest in this and would love to see if this is true. from what i understand the family i have moved to canada from scottland but other than that thats all i know. its a shot in the dark but if there is anyone that my know or have relitives in this tree feel free to conatact me jamespaynejr@outlook.com

    1. Jennifer Sistig says:

    Hello,
I am trying to find out some information or leads to my GG Grandfather; Thomas Stewart who was a Canadian born Scotsman. Born in Quebec Quebec Canada. And apparently arrived in Austrailia on a ship named the Chybassa.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

  31. JD says:

    Hi,

I did notice a question from a person JMEB who thought they were descended from a royal person, then they ask how do I prove it?

The big answer is if you know you are related, then you obviously have the proof already. If no proof why make the claim? You cannot do research backwards adding random people to your tree, then returning and adding in the evidence that proves the link. You must start with yourself and prove your parents, grandparents, etc. as your tree will no doubt be wrong.

The only way to know you have documented to your Royal ancestor is that you have found and cited all the baptism, births, marriages, deaths, burials, Wills, property documents and other documents as much as possible providing a critical link to prove parent and child. Primary sources are required otherwise you risk placing trust in what could well be proven a false pedigree published by others. Some recent American texts and even the original peerage in the UK can get it wrong or is subject to bias to make the status of ones self better especially of those who compiled information for these texts. Simply assuming the same surname or area may not be enough to prove a link as not all with the same surname are of the same descent especially in the Clans that can be seen with varied YDNA testing results on FTDNA.

Any claim such as the many made above I assume each will have substantial evidence including primary evidence to support their research linking every generation to the next (such as a will or letter naming family) and sources to cross check the research of others if the claim is copied from an established text.

Plausible Evidence = plausible connection. Lack of Evidence = no proof, your dreaming to think you have a connection

Remember evidence first, then build the tree.

  32. Bonnie Steward Moerdyk says:

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this breakdown! I had my father’s dna tested thru Ancestry, and was surprised to see we match mostly Hamilton, although there was a single match to a Stewart in Scotland. My surname (maiden name) is Steward, however my 3 gr-grandfather and some of his sons spelled it Stewart. I’ve since read that Hamilton’s and Stewart’s did marry and were major landowners years ago in Scotland. I have not been able to get any farther back than 3rd G-Grandfather …John Steward / Stewart b.1794/5 Pennsylvania d.1867 Shelby Co. Indiana, husband of Christina Pate.

    1. Jill says:

Use the free site called familysearch.org. I put in a few relatives and the site already had the rest filled in. It linked me all the way back to Scota as being a grandparent of mine, and for whom Scotland was named after. Very interesting results it give me! You’ll have a lot to navigate thru, and mostly here in the USA, I seen it was women at first, but then mostly the men’s ancestors that would expand over and over. It was a long night, but I finally went thru so many names and people. It was fun! It may tell you many people that are lords or lady’s and if you click on their name, some even have pics or documents and it tells you what their occupations were. It was awesome!

  33. Amber Brigham says:

    Hi,

    Hi,
I descend from Janet Stewart daughter of James IV (15th GG) on my mother’s side and am also an illegitimate of James V (14th GG) through my father’s.
I was the youngest of five children and my mother/cousins did Genealogy like crazy. She knew that they came from very important people and which ones to trace. Oh her side: Walter, Derby, McMath, Fleming,Livingstone,Fleming,Douglas (I hope that’s the proper order) My branches are surrounded by Jackson and Armstrong

    1. Paul says:

lol i think we related then if i am correct

    2. I had thought that I was an illegitimate 14th grandchild of James V as well but now I am not sure because the connection was deleted from my tree on FamilySearch.com. There was not enough evidence to actually prove it. My known Stewart relative is Sarah Stewart (1645-1668), who married William Patterson. Some claim she was born in England and others claim she was born in Virginia. Those of us that are descended from her are trying to find out who her parents actually were, but it may end up being a dead end.

  44. Paul says:

ermm i have been doing my family tree on Ancestry.com and i think i am James IV Great Grandson (15th Great Grandfather) though James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray and then i found so much more stuff if it is correct

  45. Debbie Liming says:

King Robert Stewart II is my 18th Great Grandfather.

  47. Kate says:

Stewarts/Stuarts forever! I am descended from James V and those kings before him via his daughter Jean Stewart (half-sister of Mary Queen of Scots). I am very pleased to have found this page. Kate in Sydney, Australia.

    1. Anne Gallant says:

I believe that I also am descended from Jean Stewart, through the Robertsons. My GG grandmother was Catherine Robertson who was born in Ontario Canada (where I live).

  48. Chris says:

Looking for information on William Stuart. Moved from a prominent family in Scotland to Pittsburgh, PA in the early 1800s. Moved to Beaver County and had a son, James Henry Stewart in 1827. I’m stuck tracing my lineage at William. My grandfather, Dr Raymond Alvin Grandey, was always a very secretive person about my grandma and his family history and a lot of his career. He said we are related to Charles II. That’s about all he ever said. Found his Shriner membership card and he was a treasurer so I guess he died with many secrets.

If anyone knows more about William’s family in Scotland please help. Thank you.

    1. Brenda says:

If you could provide more information on Jame’s wife and your Grandfather’s birth and death info and locations that could help match up some puzzle pieces.

  49. Cait Morse says:

I have researched my family history hard the past few months through Ancestry and King James V appears in my family history *five* times, on both my mother and father’s side. I am not a Stewart/Stuart though by name, it was lost a few generations ago. Is there a way to estimate how many descendants are out there?

    1. Myrtle says:

Robert the Bruce did that to me 3 times on my mothers and fathers trees
and he is on my partners….

  50. Heather Roush says:

15th generation my grandmother told me we were related to Mary Stuart
Through her son. I still grieve her death and how they brutally executed her.
Would love to connect from Pittsburgh area.

  51. Deborah Bruce-Stewart says:

you bet we are alive well in scotland , not fake ass dna descendants in usa

  52. Andrea Verner says:

Is there any gedmatch info to compare with? I have connection on my fathers side & now it seems my mothers side as well. I have read she was a very tall woman of her time at 5’11”. I am also 5’11” so this resonated with me. Her death mask image is like looking into a mirror. Very weird. I have to know.

  53. Amber Campbell/ Amber Faust says:

  54. Arabella S. says:

Royal families simply didn’t mix with commoners. Even bastards are usually from high born lines.
ScotlandsDNA has been soundly debunked at pish posh.
No, 50% of men with Stewarts as their surname cannot claim direct relation to Royal Stuart line.

  55. J. F. Minott says:

It appears that James IV was my 11th great-grandfather, and I am descended from him through his son James V and James Stewart, Regent, Earl of Moray. Is this lineage common? The Stewart surname continued for two or three generations after. I had been unaware of any Scottish ancestry until recently.

    1. Shannon Jecevicus says:

I am unsure but I also am decenced through James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray.

  56. Robert Findley says:

I have found that my cousin in Newcastle NSW is a descendant of James 1V through his first marriage to Margaret Boyd in 1491, his daughter Catherine was born the next year. Since then the families are Cleland (sorry about the spelling) Then Macgeachie, one of them married grandfathers cousin.

  57. Jacqueline parks says:

My family tree shows we are desenents of king James and the house of Stuart but I have no idea how to do the DNA to show this, it is on my grandmothers side. There was an extensive genealogy done showing that from the house of Stuart they arrived. Here in the USA along with prior information of family born at many dating in different Castles etc. an found it very interesting always knew the Canary line which is is a cousin Martha Jane Canary or “Calamity Jane” during the extensive early 90’s Geneilolgy eas do e is how and when the link wwas Found to being drsendo from King Janrss and the house of Stuart Found it fascinating and would love to know how to do or get the DNA to prove the connection!? Please help if you can to direct me further. .,, thank you!

I wonder if and when James 1V and Mary Queen of Scots will ever return to Scotland and buried in the Church of Holyrood where they belong. Also when will Holyrood Abbey restored for the Nation.

  61. Brittany says:

My family tree according to Ancestery.com and through my uncle’s search on the site a couple years ago suggests I maybe related through marriage to the Stuart’s or Stewart Dynasty of Scotlands Royal line on my 3rd great-grandmother fathers side. I traced the tree up through a number of Archibald’s and couple of Colin’s Campbells to Robert Duke of Albany and Mary Margaret Graham Countess of Menteith through their daughter Marjorie (Marcillen) Stewart Campbell. Though while its exciting there is some issues about legitimacy concerning who Marjorie (Marcillen) Stewart’s mother is and most importantly who my supposive I think 6th great Grandmother who was Isabella Campbell Mitchell who ( from only one online source) is the daughter to an unknown Duke or Earl from Scotland. According to what I remember about the e-mail that my uncle sent years ago, my 3rd great-grandmother, Cynthia Amanda Mitchell, was told through her parents that she was related to said line. I don’t have enough evidence to actually confirm this but would appreciate any help into looking into it.

  62. adrian stewart says:

hi my name is Adrian Stewart,i traced my family to the year 600. its tough to get people to understand i am a direct descendant. i trace my dad’s line. little berry Stewart, to alexander the fierce 4th high steward of Scotland. a lot of people go by here say which doesn’t help any when the connection with DNA trees.when family doesn’t follow records. I didn’t believe it . did my tree 25 times it just reaffirmed it .
my dad had one name of his granddad .thats all i got from him. i went searching i start seeing that was white but then i rechecked and the same place it was a mulatto and it blew my mind but there is also articles and wills and official records like alan fitz walter stewart 2 high steward of Scotland knights templar crusader to flaad baguo dol 1st hereditay sensehal , hamon de dinan 980 1036 . then up frorm their
im stil confused on whats this mean . it says i from the house of stuart . stewart clan .
but i am black American with British DNA they ended up in the British ruled and controlled Virginia

  63. Robert the Bruce was my 18th GGF. The Stewart line is very diluted by the time it gets to me, but I am happy about this fraction of my genetic heritage. I live in the foothills of Colorado, west of Boulder, with dogs and horses.

  64. Dottie says:

My ggg-grandfather was Alexander I Stewart born in S.Carolina 1804 I wonder if he could be a defendant of
    Patrick Stewart.

  65. Tammy Ivey Droste says:

I believe our line goes back to Mary Stewart (parents Margaret Drummond and King James IV of Scotland), Mary married Sir John Drummond (related to Margaret)…Is anyone else searching that line/connection ?

  66. Tara says:

    Hello All
If someone can help my research. I know that I have many of the English and Scottish royal family in my tree. I am not a Stewart descendant but I am within the family. My 9th great grandmother was dame Magdalen Monteith her maiden name is Dalyell. I know that the monteiths are direct descendants of robert bruce through I believe Mary queen of scotts. Magdalen Monteith married James Monteith and his ancestry leads directly to the Bruce’s and Stewarts. I also have Campbell’s,Hamiltons,Kerr’s, Drummond’s,Wallace in this tree as cousins.
If anyone is versed on this can you please respond.

  67. My grandfather was Athol Graham Stewart, a life long protestant and commercial artist/sign painter. He married Mary Alice Demody, a Catholic and they had 3 children. The youngest, John Joseph Stewart (Jay Stewart, in radio, tv, publishing and media) was my father–born 1930. My grandparents lived in Monroe, Michigan. I reach a stone wall going back further. My grandfather had an odd accent and was very quiet. He also had an earlier marriage I know little about but had a daughter named Shirley, a half sister to my father and his brother and sister, Robert Stewart and Eileen Stewart Cavanaugh. I got my grandfather’s birthplace in Toronto in 1888. Other data mentions that he lived in Nova Scotia and/or London, Ontario.

    Bonjour,

  77. Melanie Bartmess says:

I just learned that by bio father is a Stewart. I haven’t gotten very far back in time with my search yet — Thomas Stewart b. 23 Nov 1791 Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire, Scotland. He immigrated to Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick, Canada where he married Elizabeth Payne (1797-1862) . His son, John K. Stewart (1830-1885) who I descend from moved Ouachita Parish, Louisiana by 1868.

  78. Tabitha says:

Like many others, I was told we are descendants of Mary Queen of Scotland, at one time my grandmother did a family tree(sadly my dad can’t find it anymore)…So, I’ve started one on Ancestry and now I’m stuck, can’t find any more info for Johnathan Stewart 1823 Ohio(except who he married, children, birth and death date).

  79. Hi,
For any one wishing to join with the Royal Clan Stewart descendants, there are a number of groups on Facebook. I myself am a descendant of the Royal Stewart via both my maternal grandparents, a fact that I didn’t know until I took a DNA test. I do remember my maternal grandmother mentioning Bonnie Prince Charlie.

I also wished to find out if I had Russian, Hungarian and American Indigenous ancestry but I am as yet unable to confirm the American Indigenous except for being ‘old bloodlines’. and according to MyTrueAncestry allocated a time period between 1000-1680 A.D. from Greenland and what is now Virginia, USA.
