The iconic Orkney Hooded Chair was traditionally made from driftwood washed up from the sea. Timber in Orkney is scarce so islanders would use other materials to make furniture.<\/p>\n<p>The earliest version\u00a0of the chair was more like a low round stool covered with straw. \u00a0From this it developed into a low chair by the addition of a straw back. \u00a0The height of the back was originally around 2 feet high. \u00a0From here the back of the chair became hooded &#8211; possibly to shelter from draughts. \u00a0The warmth from the hearth would envelope the occupant of the seat keeping in the war. \u00a0As well as an Orkney Hooded Chair it is also known as the Orkney Warming Chair.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65585\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65585\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65585\" src=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hood2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hood2.jpg 400w, https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hood2-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Can see the woman is sat on a hooded chair<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65586\" src=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hood3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"291\" height=\"173\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The seat in early times remained round and covered with straw.<\/p>\n<p>The design was taken forward by a native of one of Orkney&#8217;s more northerly islands who first made the chair with a square wooden seat, no straw covered this new seat. \u00a0 Timber as starting to be brought into Orkney and had become more available. \u00a0Around this period ( late 18th \u00a0early19th Century) the drawer would also have been added. \u00a0This style has not changed that much to this day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_65587\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-65587\" style=\"width: 194px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-65587\" src=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/hood4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"259\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-65587\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><i>Weaving the back of The Orkney Chair<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After 1890 the style became more standard, they were produced on a more commercial basis. \u00a0Although these chairs were really just &#8216;one offs&#8217;
