{"id":5690,"date":"2009-08-13T21:25:17","date_gmt":"2009-08-13T21:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/bletherskite\/?p=728"},"modified":"2009-08-13T21:25:17","modified_gmt":"2009-08-13T21:25:17","slug":"trumpan-church-on-skye-and-a-murdered-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/?p=5690","title":{"rendered":"Trumpan Church on Skye and a murdered generation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_39589\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39589\" style=\"width: 488px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/skye-church11.gif.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39589 \" alt=\"Skye Trumpan Church\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/skye-church11.gif.jpg\" width=\"488\" height=\"376\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/skye-church11.gif.jpg 488w, https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/08\/skye-church11.gif-300x231.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 488px) 100vw, 488px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39589\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skye &#8211; Trumpan Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This tiny ruined church sits in solitude overlooking the sea at Trumpan. \u00a0Once the centre of a\u00a0medieval\u00a0village, Trumpan church now stands as a monument to a dark history where an entire population were massacred.<\/p>\n<p>Back in the 1500s The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish_clans\/clans\/macdonald\/\">MacDonalds<\/a> and The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish_clans\/clans\/macleod\/\">MacLeods<\/a> were engaged in fierce clan rivalry. \u00a0This came to a head in 1577 when a band of MacLeods of Skye landed on the island of Eigg. \u00a0The resident MacDonalds took refuge in a cave, but the raiding party lit a fire at it&#8217;s entrance and suffocated all The MacDonald&#8217;s to death,\u00a0all 395 people from the island. \u00a0This cave is now known as &#8216;massacre cave&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/clan-shop\/macleod\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/macleod-ad2.jpg\" alt=\"macleod-ad2\" width=\"600\" height=\"212\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/macleod-ad2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/macleod-ad2-300x106.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In retribution for this a gang from the clan <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish_clans\/clans\/macdonald_of_clanranald\/\">MacDonald of Clanranald<\/a> burnt the MacLeod church of Trumpan to the ground together with it&#8217;s trapped congregation. \u00a0\u00a0The only MacLeod to escape alive was a young girl who managed to squeeze through a window. She raised the alarm, after running to\u00a0Dunvegan<a href=\"http:\/\/www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk\/skye\/dunvegancastle\/index.html\">,<\/a> ten miles away. At the same time fellow Macleods hastened to Ardmore Bay with their charmed &#8216;fairy flag&#8217;, slaughtering all MacDonalds they came across, hardly any escaped the massacre. \u00a0The bodies of these MacDonalds were lined up and buried by a dyke which was pushed over on top of their corpses, hence the name of this skirmish &#8211; The Battle of the Spoiling of the Dyke.<\/p>\n<p>The village of Trumpan was never re-established.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This tiny ruined church sits in solitude overlooking the sea at Trumpan. \u00a0Once the centre of a\u00a0medieval\u00a0village, Trumpan church now stands as a monument to a dark history where an entire population were massacred.
