They are looking to start up new lives across the sea.<\/p>\n<p>This week will see the start of the official removal of 40 sheep and lambs\u00a0 from the\u00a0 island.\u00a0 These sheep have been on the island for more than a century.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39612\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39612\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/barra-head.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39612\" alt=\"Barra Head\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/barra-head.jpg\" width=\"241\" height=\"317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/barra-head.jpg 241w, https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/barra-head-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39612\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barra Head<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The National Trust for Scotland who owns Berneray and it&#8217;s neighbouring islands has decided it was too difficult to manage a flock from this remote island and are tranferring them to a farm on Canna.<\/p>\n<p>Willie Fraser, Property Manager for the trust in Kintail said &#8221; We have things like the blue-tongue vaccination coming in so they would have to be vaccinated every year, and with it being such a remote island it&#8217;s very difficult to get there.\u00a0 We are so far from the flock it is no longer viable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The island used to be owned by The Barra Head Isles Sheep-stock Company, a syndicate of local crofters and fishermen.\u00a0 The syndicate bought this island and two others for \u00a314,000 and kept a flock of around 500 sheep there.\u00a0 However, the falling prices of sheep eventually forced them to sell the islands to The National Trust of Scotland in 2000 for \u00a3500,000.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39611\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39611\" style=\"width: 450px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Barra_Head_Lighthouse_cliffs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39611\" alt=\"Barra Head Lighthouse on the cliffs\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Barra_Head_Lighthouse_cliffs.jpg\" width=\"450\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Barra_Head_Lighthouse_cliffs.jpg 450w, https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/06\/Barra_Head_Lighthouse_cliffs-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39611\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barra Head Lighthouse on the cliffs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since the island being bought by The National Trust\u00a0 of Scotland the sheep have been gradually removed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The island of Berneray or Barra Head is a tiny island in the Outer Hebrides.\u00a0 Sadly the last residents of this remote Scottish island are finally leaving the land where their ancestors have lived for generations.
