src=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/mhairi-black-300x300.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>A few weeks ago I posted the Scottish news that 16 and 17-year-olds will be voting next May for the 2016 Scottish Parliamentary elections.\u00a0 As noted, next year will be a big year in Scottish politics, potentially including an up or down vote on whether Scotia should schedule a second independence referendum.\u00a0 Over 100,000 16 and 17-year-olds stepped into the voting booth nearly one year ago to register their vote in the Indy referendum.\u00a0 They voted overwhelmingly in favor of Scottish independence.\u00a0 They lost that election but they won the right to make their suffrage permanent.\u00a0 It must be an exciting time to be young in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Exercising the vote is only one way that Scottish youth are stepping up their impact in Scotland.\u00a0 There are leaders among them who are not content only to vote for others to lead the nation.\u00a0 Young people like twenty-year-old Mhairi Black are intent on becoming leaders themselves.\u00a0 She\u00a0 undertook her campaign in last spring&#8217;s United Kingdom General Election in order to become the next Minister of Parliament from Paisley\/Renfrewshire South.\u00a0 To the surprise of many, Mhairi succeeded in that project and she took her seat at Westminster and graduated from the University of Glasgow all in one exciting year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/screen_shot_2015-07-15_at_12.24.05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-56677\" alt=\"screen_shot_2015-07-15_at_12.24.05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/screen_shot_2015-07-15_at_12.24.05-300x225.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>In the U.K. Parliament they call your first speech on the floor of the House of Commons your &#8220;maiden speech&#8221;.\u00a0 Mhairi Black, M.P. made hers on July 14, 2015.\u00a0 So far, the speech has had over 10,000,000 views on YouTube.\u00a0 Over 10 Million views.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bing.com\/videos\/search?q=mhairi+black+william+wallace+speech+youtube&amp;FORM=VIRE4#view=detail&amp;mid=207C63EA98318AF5DAE4207C63EA98318AF5DAE4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Watch it here. \u00a0 <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mhairi is the youngest British lawmaker in over a century.\u00a0 She is fresh faced, confident and energetic and a serious contributor.\u00a0 She is a member of the SNP that unseated a major British political figure &#8211; former Shadow Foreign Secretary and Labour icon Douglas Alexander to take over the paisley seat.\u00a0 While Mhairi&#8217;s campaign might have been seen as a youthful training mission in the beginning, it did not take long for Ms. Black to acquit herself on the hustings.\u00a0 She is thoughtful and articulate.\u00a0 Ultimately, she proved way too much for the career politician she opposed who agreed himself that the campaign had been run at a consistently high level and yielded a fair result.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/82881014_snpbridgepa.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-56678\" alt=\"_82881014_snpbridgepa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/82881014_snpbridgepa-300x168.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>Mhairi Black may be the youngest Scottish MP and the one capturing most of the world&#8217;s attention at present, but Scotland&#8217;s entire profile is a very young one.\u00a0 With an average age of 46, Scotland&#8217;s 59 MPs are the youngest of all the nations in the U.K.\u00a0 There is no question that Scotland&#8217;s &#8220;next generation&#8221; is not at all timid about their duty and opportunity to take up their share of the burden of democratic representation.\u00a0 <a rel=\"noopener\">This is a great introduction to young Mhairi Black, M.P., speaking recently at a commemoration hosted by the wonderful heritage group The Society For William Wallace<\/a>.\u00a0 Mhairi reminds the crowd in this clip\u00a0why remembering ancestors like William Wallace is important to us all.\u00a0 It is also worth noting that Mhairi carefully points out that she did not learn about Wallace in her primary school education.\u00a0 But she was fortunate enough to have learned her heritage from her parents and she clearly has an appreciation for
