Signposted with odd names like \u2018Fleshmarket\u2019, \u2018Lady Stair\u2019s\u2019 and \u2018World\u2019s End\u2019, these closes, wynds, courts and entries play an essential role in Edinburgh\u2019s charming infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Situated within the (former) town walls, the exceptionally narrow streets weren\u2019t a mistake of engineering. With the threat of English attack always at the forefront, skinny streets surrounded by tall buildings provided early city dwellers with protection and peace of mind.<\/p>\n<p>Edinburgh\u2019s medieval honeycomb of hidden alleyways also contains some of the city\u2019s best stories, secrets and mysteries. Many of Edinburgh\u2019s most influential characters once called these closes home &#8211; and some are believed to still lurk among the cobblestones.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary King\u2019s Close<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5798\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5798\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5798\" alt=\"Mary King\u2019s Close\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close1-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5798\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mary King\u2019s Close<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to local folklore, Mary King\u2019s Close, situated in the heart of the Royal Mile near the City Chambers, is one of the most haunted places in Edinburgh. For centuries, the close &#8211; and all of its secrets &#8211; were buried below the city and forgotten. It wasn\u2019t until April 2003 that it finally re-opened to the public.<\/p>\n<p>Historians and archeologists believe the close was more than just a single narrow passageway, but actually an entrance to several more closes and multiple tenements owned by 17th-century advocate Alexander King. King named the close after his daughter Mary, who is thought to have herself grown to be a prosperous Edinburgh business woman.<\/p>\n<p>Of the many gruesome stories associated with Mary King\u2019s Close, the most disturbing is the rumour of what happened after its residents were struck with plague in 1645. Legend has it that the local council incarcerated the victims and bricked up the close, trapping everyone inside. Some say this is what earned the close its nickname as the \u2018Street of Sorrows\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Today, Mary King\u2019s Close is home to one of the city\u2019s most popular ghost tours, titled \u2018The Real Mary Kings Close\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lady Stair\u2019s Close<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5799\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5799\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5799 \" alt=\"Makars\u2019 Court\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close2-300x202.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Makars\u2019 Court<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Whilst this close may be named after the widow of John Dalrymple, the first Earl of Stair, it\u2019s most famous for its role in Edinburgh\u2019s literary heritage. Lady Stair\u2019s Close is now the site of Edinburgh\u2019s Writers\u2019 Museum. The Museum is dedicated to sharing the stories of Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson and Robert Burns &#8211; all of whom once called Edinburgh home.<\/p>\n<p>Within the close sits Makars\u2019 Court, itself another tribute to Edinburgh\u2019s literary greats (\u2018Makar\u2019 is the Scots term for \u2018poet\u2019 or \u2018bard\u2019). The Court\u2019s flagstones are inscribed with the words of the city\u2019s most influential authors, from medieval writers like John Barbour (c.1320-1395) and William Dunbar (c.1460- c.1520), to modern-day literary figures like Sydney Goodsir Smith (1915-1975) and \u2018Prime of Miss Jean Brodie\u2019 author Muriel Spark (1918 &#8211; 2006).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advocate&#8217;s Close<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5800\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5800\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5800 \" alt=\"Advocate's Close\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close3-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advocate&#8217;s Close<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dating back to 1544, this recently renovated close was named in honour of Sir James Stewart of Goodtrees. Stewart was Lord Advocate of Scotland after the Glorious Revolution, serving from 1692 to 1715.<\/p>\n<p>Famous former residents of Advocate\u2019s Close include Adam Bothwell, Bishop of Orkney and head of the Augustinian monastic community at Holyrood Abbey from 1568 to 1582, and John Scougal, an official painter to William III and Queen Mary.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to Edinburgh can stay in Scougal\u2019s former home and painting studio, now one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vieamhor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VieAmhor\u2019s apartments<\/a>. The close is also the site of Edinburgh\u2019s newest \u2018hidden\u2019 gem, the cleverly named Devil\u2019s Advocate bar and restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><strong>White Horse Close<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5801\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5801\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5801 \" alt=\"White Horse Close\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bletherskite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/close4-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5801\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">White Horse Close<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Situated near the bottom of the Royal Mile, this often-overlooked close is perhaps the most picturesque of them all. Whilst many of the buildings within White Horse Close have been rebuilt and converted since the Middle Ages, this historic corner of Edinburgh\u2019s Old Town hasn\u2019t lost its charm.<\/p>\n<p>During the 16th-century, White Horse Close contained the Royal Mews, and legend has it that the close is named after a famous horse that was stabled there &#8211; Mary, Queen of Scots\u2019 beloved white palfrey. However, it\u2019s more likely that the close gets its name from the \u2018White Horse Inn\u2019, built by Laurence Ord in the 17th-century.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also thought that the close is where Jacobite officers stayed when Bonnie Prince Charlie occupied Holyrood Palace during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1735. Less than 60 years later, the close served as the birthplace of William Dick, founder of Edinburgh\u2019s Royal Dick School of Veterinary Studies.<\/p>\n<p>These are just four of more than 70 closes, courts, wynds and entries situated off the Royal Mile.
