{"id":1924,"date":"2010-04-25T00:38:43","date_gmt":"2010-04-24T22:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/bletherskite\/?p=1924"},"modified":"2010-04-25T00:38:43","modified_gmt":"2010-04-24T22:38:43","slug":"nicholsons-leap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/project1-m9gb2xku8.live-website.com\/?p=1924","title":{"rendered":"Nicholson&#8217;s Leap"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_39464\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39464\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dun-othail1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-39464\" alt=\"D\u00f9n Othail\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/dun-othail1.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39464\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">D\u00f9n Othail<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is an old legend from the Isle of Lewis which tells the story behind &#8220;Leum Mhac Nicol&#8221; or &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-nicolson\/\">Nicholson<\/a>&#8216;s Leap&#8221;, a rockravine which seperates D\u00f9n Othail from the mainland.<\/p>\n<p>Legend has it a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macneacail\/\">MacNeacail<\/a> man had commited a crime and was sentenced by the chief of Lewis to be castrated.\u00a0 Once this horrific sentance was carried out, the castrated man full of fury at what had been done to him sought revenge by kidnapping the chief&#8217;s only child.\u00a0 MacNeacail took the child\u00a0 to the ravine and leaped across the chasm. He threatened to throw the child into the sea unless the chief himself agreed to be mutilated as well. Attempts at rescuing the child failed and the chief finally agreed to the mans terms.
