id=\"caption-attachment-1443\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Knock Castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Knock Castle is also known as Caisteal Camus, it is 3.5 miles north of Armadale on the Isle of Skye. \u00a0It was held by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macleod\">MacLeods<\/a> in the fifteenth century, but later passed to the <a title=\"Clan MacDonald\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macdonald\/\">MacDonalds<\/a>. \u00a0Knock Castle became the key stronghold for the Lords of the Isles &#8211; The MacDonalds. \u00a0Some say that if it wasn&#8217;t for the carelessness of the warden who held it for the <a title=\"Clan MacLeod\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macleod\/\">MacLeods<\/a> and allowed himself to be suprised, the MacDonalds would have never set foot in Skye. \u00a0When the Lords of the Isles eventually left Knock Castle for Dunscaith it became the fortress of the <a title=\"Clan MacDonald of Sleat\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macdonald-of-sleat\/\">Barons of Sleat<\/a> and stood seige from the <a title=\"Clan MacLeod\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotclans.com\/scottish-clans\/clan-macleod\/\">MacLeods<\/a> at the end of the fifteenth century. \u00a0On this occassion it was defended, and most bravely, by a woman, &#8216;Mary of the Castle&#8217;. \u00a0The story of how she came to be in charge is a mystery, but most of the MacDonald women were\u00a0competent\u00a0fighters so this is not completely out of the ordinary. \u00a0Stories of Mary&#8217;s courage and skill are still told to this day. \u00a0It was under the shelter of her shield that the clan had time to gather and to
